Aluminium or PVC? A Window and Door Selection Guide
Compare materials alongside opening dimensions, everyday use, appearance and overall system performance.

Start with your requirements, not the material
When choosing a new window or balcony door, aluminium or PVC should not be the only question. Opening dimensions, how the space is used, the preferred opening style and budget should be considered together. The condition of the existing frame and its junction with the wall also affect the scope of work. Different openings in the same building may require different solutions.
When should you consider aluminium systems?
Aluminium options can be considered for large glazed areas, sliding doors and designs that emphasise slim frame lines. However, not every profile is suitable for every opening. Sash dimensions, glass weight and hardware capacity must remain within the chosen system's technical limits. Rather than assuming durability or insulation from the material alone, compare documented product specifications.
What should you ask about PVC frames?
PVC windows and doors are commonly considered for residential spaces. Colour, profile geometry, glazing and opening style all shape everyday use. Check whether an open sash will interfere with curtains or furniture. Plan options such as tilt-and-turn windows, fixed glazing and balcony doors around ventilation and access needs. The glazing and installation details deserve as much discussion as the frame brand.
A checklist for comparing quotes
For a meaningful comparison, request the same scope for the frame system, glazing specification, hardware, colour and finish. Clarify in writing whether removal, transport, installation and finishing work are included. If insulation is a priority, ask about the performance of the complete proposed window or door, not just the frame. A clear quote that addresses the space's requirements is a better basis for a decision.
